Umbrella Orphans and Widows: St Luke’s Nursery School.
Today there over 3 million children living with HIV, almost 2 million of them are below the age of 15 and live in Sub-Saharan Africa (Merico 2005). Although many people including children are heavily affected by HIV Aids in the world, St Luke’s takes pride in providing orphan children with what every child has a right to under the United Nations Convention of the Right of the Child 1989. Thus our children can participate in education, play, and be of good health thereby supporting their economic and social well being as citizens in the society. St Luke was formed as one response by Mrs Mary Oloo to the escalating number of children suffering from paediatric HIV Aids exclusion from several primary services due to a consternation of factors including poverty, being orphans, lack of access to appropriate medical care amongst other things. And the project under the auspices of Umbrella Widows has grown from strength to strength, breaking down barriers of stigmatisation and gaining the trust of members of the community
